Sleeping with the mouth open often happens to the people who wear dental retainers. In this case, there is very little you can do except for adding extra protection on your lips before bedtime. Put a bit of almond oil on the lips, let it dry for 5 minutes and add another, thicker layer of petroleum jelly. This should stop the lips from getting dry.
Don’t Use Harsh Toothpaste
Many kinds of toothpaste contain sodium lauryl sulphate, which is the foaming agent. If your lips tend to get dry and cracked, this ingredient may be the culprit. Try to switch to a gentler toothpaste, without sodium lauryl sulphate for a week or two and see if you’ll notice any improvement in the condition of your lips.
How To Avoid Cracked Lips
Always wear a care lipstick with sunscreen. Your lips need protection from the UV radiation just like your skin does. While the sunscreen applied on the face can give you a protection for a few hour, lipstick doesn’t last that long because we eat, drink, chew, smoke and talk. That’s why you should always have a care lipstick on you and apply it several times a day. If you wear coloured lipstick, apply the one with UV protection first, let your lips dry for a moment and then finish your make up with the lip liner and lipstick.
Smoking damages the lips in many ways. First of all, nicotine breaks the collagen in the skin and makes your lips look older. Second of all, everything that comes in contact with the lips can affect them and a cigarette packed with harmful chemicals affects them a lot. The thin skin of your lips absorbs everything really fast, both the nutrients and the harmful ingredients. That’s why in order to protect your skin from getting damaged, dry and cracked, avoid smoking or ate least reduce it to the minimum.
Avoid Air-Conditioned Rooms
Air conditioning can make you feel very comfortable, especially on a very hot day, but it can also cause a lot of skin problems at the same time. The air delivered by the air-conditioning systems is very dry and it can make your lips, face and hands very dry. If you can’t avoid staying in air-conditioned rooms for a long time, remember to protect your lips well and to apply a care lipstick or petroleum jelly several times a day.
Drinking a lot of water helps you stay in a good shape, reduces your appetite, boosts the rejuvenation processes and speeds up the removal of toxins from your body. If you want to maintain your skin and your lips well hydrated, remember to drink at least 1.5 litres of water every day to prevent dehydration of your body and your skin.
