How To Get Straight Hair With Home Treatments

Coconut milk

Coconut milk is a popular ingredient in many shampoos and conditioners for a good reason. It not only moisturises and nourishes hair, but also has antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties, so it helps maintain the scalp in a good condition, too. Shampoos and conditioners contain only a small amount of coconut milk and to make the most of its benefits you should use the pure, organic version of this product.

Get a cup of coconut milk and pour it into a glass bowl or a jar. Squeeze the juice of one lemon and add it to the container. Put the mixture into the fridge for a few hours. When you take it out of the fridge after that time, you will see that on the top of the mix there is a creamy layer. This is the mask you will use on your hair to make it smooth, straight and shiny. Wash your hair with a delicate shampoo and rinse it well. Dry your hair with a towel and apply the coconut milk hair mask on the moist hair, massaging it both into the scalp and the hair. Cover the hair with a shower cap and wrap a warm towel around it. You can either use a towel that you soak in hot water and wring it or you can put a moist towel in the microwave for one minute. The slightly higher temperature will make the nutrients from the coconut milk mask be absorbed faster. Leave the mask on for 20-30 minutes and rinse it off with warm water. Comb your hair and leave it to dry. It’s best to do it in the evening, rather than before going out so that you don’t have to apply heat on the freshly nourished hair.

This treatment gives visible effects after just one use, but to get really good results you should do it twice a week.

Milk

Regular milk is also known to be used in many hair-straightening and moisturising products. Thanks to the high level of proteins contained it makes the hair stronger and smooth. There are many ways of applying milk onto the hair and probably the handiest one is with a spray bottle. Mix half a cup of milk with half a cup of water and apply the combination onto your hair, strand by strand, then comb your hair and leave the milk on for 30 minutes. After that time rinse your hair with warm water and shampoo it as usually.

Alternatively, you can mix a tablespoon of honey and three crushed strawberries in a cup of milk. Wash your hair to cleanse it of any chemical products, dry it with a towel and apply the mixture on the moist hair. Leave it on for 30 minutes. You can cover your hair with a shower cap. Rinse the mixture off with warm water and shampoo it again.

Milk also does wonders when combined with eggs. It provides a protein boost to your hair and straightens the protein bonds in the hair. The treatment has been reported to give relatively long-lasting effects. Stir 2 eggs into 2 cups of organic milk and pour it over your hair or dip your hair in the mixture. Once all the hair is soaked with the solution, leave it on for 30 minutes and rinse it off with warm water, then shampoo. You can repeat this treatment 2-3 times a week.

Hot Oil Treatment

Various oils can be used for home treatments aimed at straightening the hair. The most popular ones are coconut, olive, almond and sesame oils. Obviously, just like in the case of any other home treatment that involves the products you can find in the kitchen, it’s best if you go for the organic products. You can use only one type of oil or mix them in equal amounts to achieve a stronger nourishing effect. Pour the oil into a small bowl and heat it in the microwave for up to half a minute. The oil cannot be too hot because it can damage your hair and burn your scalp when it comes in contact with the delicate skin on your head. Also, when you bring the oil to a very high temperature, it loses some of its properties. Dip your fingers in the warm oil and massage it into your scalp with gentle, circular movements. Once your scalp absorbs enough oil, apply a small amount of it to the endings. Then comb your hair to distribute the oil its whole length. Wet a towel in hot water, wring it and wrap around your hair. Leave it on for 30 minutes, then shampoo your hair as usual. Finish the treatment off by combing the hair with a wide-toothed comb. Avoid using brush during this type of treatments.

Regular hot oil treatment will make your hair stronger, softer, shinier and – most importantly – straight. Remember, however, that it might not be suitable for very thin hair as it adds a bit of weight and could make your hair lose volume.

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is one of the most efficient natural moisturisers and works great not only when used for skin treatments. An aloe vera mask can give your hair a boost of nutrients and will moisturise it really well since the ingredients contained in the plant penetrate easily into the hair strands. The higher the level of moisture in your hair, the straighter the strands become. You can use organic aloe vera gel that is available in pharmacies and in health food stores, but it’ s best to use the pulp of a fresh plant. Take a large leaf of aloe vera, cut it in half and squeeze the pulp into a small bowl. Take an equal amount of olive oil and heat it for half a minute in the microwave. Mix the two ingredients well and massage it into your scalp and spread liberally on the hair. Cover your hair with a shower cap and keep the mask on for up to two hours. If you hair is very thin, you can rinse the mask off earlier because keeping the oil on for too long might add unnecessary weight. Make sure you rinse it with warm, not just lukewarm, water, otherwise the oil will not get removed from the hair and might leave a greasy look. Shampoo your hair, towel dry it and leave it to dry naturally.

Eggs and Olive Oil

If you want a treatment that will make your hair straight, shiny, strong and healthy at the same time, try the mask of eggs and olive oil. Depending on the length of your hair you might need from one to three eggs. Beat them with a fork and add two to four tablespoons of olive oil. Shampoo your hair and rinse it to remove any chemical products that might be preventing the nutrients from penetrating the hair. Apply the egg and olive oil mask on moist hair by massaging half of it into the scalp and spreading the remaining part along the hair. Cover your hair with a shower cap because the mask might be dripping and will stain your clothes. Leave the mask on for 30 to 45 minutes and rinse it off with warm water. Shampoo your hair and towel dry it. Once your hair gets dry, you will notice how much softer it has become due to the nutrients and how much straighter it has become thanks to the moisturising properties of olive oil and the boost of proteins from the eggs.

Apple Cider Vinegar

This product is often recommended in antibacterial and antifungal treatments and not many people associate it with hair care. However, apple cider vinegar not only gives your hair a healthy and glossy look but also strengthens the hair structure and makes it straighter. Additionally, it helps maintain the scalp free of fungus and bacteria. The best thing about this treatments is that it’s very simple and quick. All you need to do is mix two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with a cup of lukewarm water and use it as the final rinse after you shampoo your hair and rinse it with normal water. There is no need to rinse it off. Just towel dry your hair and let it dry naturally. If you have some symptoms of scalp infection, for example when the skin on your head is itchy, you can also rub some of the mixture of water and apple cider vinegar into your scalp, leave it on for 10-15 minutes and then rinse it off. You can do both treatments two to three times a week.

Beer

You may have heard about bear treatments for the hair. For centuries beer has been used by women who wanted to have soft and glossy hair. Due to the fact that beer contains a surprisingly high level of proteins, it also acts as a straightening agent. There are two ways of using beer in the hair treatment. The first option is to boil one cup of beer until it reduces to half. Take it off the heat and let cool down. Add your regular shampoo to the previously prepared beer and wash your hair with the mix. You can leave the shampoo with beer on your hair for two or three minutes more than you would normally do so that the proteins from beer have enough time to penetrate the hair. Rinse your hair and let it dry.

The second way to take advantage of the properties of beer in your hair treatment is to use it as a rinse after you shampoo your hair. Once the hair is clean after washing, simply get one small beer and rinse your hair with it. Don’t rinse it with water, later on, just leave the beer on. Don’t worry about the smell as it will be minimal once the hair gets dry.

Celery Leaves

Celery is the staple of many diets, especially those based on juices. It’s because celery contains a very wide range of nutrients. When used for hair treatments, celery makes your hair stronger, healthier and better moisturised. It is, however, quite a time-consuming treatment, but one that is definitely worth a try.

First, you need to get a spray bottle since the celery juice you will prepare should be applied on your hair in the form of a spray. Chop some celery leaves and mix them with water. You can prepare a bigger quantity of the paste straight away as you can keep the juice in the fridge for up to two weeks. Once the water extracts the juice, strain the juice with a clean, muslin cloth. Pour the juice into the bottle and leave it in the fridge for two days. After that time, you can start the treatment. Spray your hair liberally with the celery juice and comb it with a wide-toot comb. This way you will make sure that the liquid reaches all the strands. Perform a gentle scalp massage with circular movements and leave the juice on your hair for 30 minutes. Rinse your hair and wash it with your regular shampoo. Finish off with a conditioner. You should repeat the treatment two to three times a week for the first month and then do it once a week to maintain the good results.

Fuller’s Earth

There are few beauty products as versatile as fuller’s earth. Due to its wide range of properties, fuller’s earth is use in many natural and herbal skincare and haircare products. It contains iron, calcium, silica, quartz, magnesium and many other minerals. It has become a common ingredient of cleansing, oil-absorbing and antiseptic masks and creams. You can also buy it in the form of powder and incorporate it into your home treatment aimed at straightening your hair.

To prepare a fuller’s earth hair mask mix one cup of the powder with one egg white and a tablespoon of rice flour. Apply the mix on your hair and spread it with a comb. You can also apply it directly with a comb to avoid mess and to make sure all the strands get the same amount of fuller’s earth mixture. Leave it on for half an hour and rinse off with lukewarm water. Shampoo your hair and apply your usual conditioner. Repeat the treatment twice a week for a month.

Castor Oil

Castor Oil has not only straightening properties but also supports the growth of the hair, conditions and hydrates it, prevents it from frizzing and protects the scalp from infections. You can mix two tablespoons of castor oil with one tablespoon of soybean oil, then heat it for half a minute in the microwave. Dip your fingers in the mix of oils and massage the liquid into the scalp. Comb your hair to spread the oils liberally over the whole length and leave it on for 30 minutes. Rinse it off with warm water and style your hair the way you want.

Alternatively, you can put castor oil in a spray bottle, apply it strand by strand on your hair and simultaneously increase the temperature with the hair dryer. Ideally, you should take one strand, spray it with castor oil, comb it and dry it. Castor oil penetrates deeper layers of the hair when it’s slightly warmer. After the treatment, there will be no need to wash or rinse your hair. Just like with any other oil treatment, reduce the amount of liquid if your hair is very thin and has little volume.
