Over-the-counter laxatives can cause structural damage to surface epithelial cells that line the rectum, as well as a number of other side effects. When used over time laxatives can cause diarrhea, which is an intestinal obstruction where bowels become clogged by large, dark stools.

Laxatives may also cause an imbalance in the salt and mineral levels in your body. More common side-effects that aren’t as harmful include:

  • Dehydration
  • Bloating
  • Stomach Pain
  • Flatulence
  • Feeling Sick

When looking towards treating constipation it is wise to steer clear of any over-the-counter laxatives and look towards natural home remedies instead. No one knows your body better than you, and it’s important that you understand your own personal bowel movement schedule.

Most ingredients can already be found in most households, which means no running to the drug store or pharmacy and shamefully buying a box of over-the-counter laxatives. No one wants to do that, nor should they have to when constipation can be taken care of so easily at home.

While drinking a lot of water is important to do every day when you’re constipated be sure to stay hydrated. If you tend to get constipated on a regular occasion, you might want to think about some changes to your diet and exercise habits.

Constipation doesn’t have to be such a pain in the rear end when you take the preventative measures necessary to improve your life.

If your constipation has become a regular occurrence, improving your lifestyle should help dramatically. If it doesn’t improve, it could be a sign of something more serious and may be time to consult your doctor.

    1. Ken, I have suffered IBSC my entire life. Pain medication can definitely cause constipation so I refuse to take them even after surgery. However there is a natural cure which will work!!!! Every morning take 4 -6 teaspoons of baking soda in about 6 ounces of room temperature water. Drink as fast as you can and make sure you stir it good. Be ready to use the bathroom within a hour or sometimes less. You have to be able to tolerate the taste of baking soda which I got use to over time. You may have diarrhea even but I wouldn’t recommend doing it every day. It’s safe and effective but drink plenty of water and I wouldn’t eat before it and don’t eat until you start going to the bathroom. Also, I have diverticulitis which it helps a lot with that also. It’s also a natural way to detox and clean out your system. Another thing I do is talk to my doctor who has prescribed me linzess and it works well but that’s not always the case. My constipation is so bad so I completely understand. It’s worth giving the baking soda a try and it won’t hurt to add extra teaspoons of it seeing you are so backed up. Good luck! 🍀

  2. Ken you should know that going that long without a bowel movement can harm your body. You need to get an enema and take that fast. If that doesn't work you need to see a doctor about this. I'm not sure I understood everything but it sounds like pain medicine is causing you to be constipated, they have two new drugs for that. Being constipated because of Narcotics is a whole different ballgame. They now have 2 brand new prescriptions on the market that are for people who are constipated because of narcotics. Go see your doctor. One of the medicines name is movantik, the other medicine is called relistor these two are for people who are constipated because of pain medicine only.
