Applying fresh, cold cucumber on your dry and chapped lips is a great way to not only moisturise them but also to soothe the discomfort caused by the cracked skin. Cut a few slices of cucumber and put them in the fridge for 20 minutes. After that time, take one of the slices and rub your lips gently with it. Once it gets warm, take another slice from the fridge. Repeat the process until you feel some relief from the pain. For best results, do this at least three times a day as your dry lips need a real boost of hydration.
Alternatively, you can grate a piece of cucumber, cool it down in the fridge and apply the paste on your lips. Leave it on for 15 minutes, then wash off with cold water. When you apply grated cucumber, the skin on your lips absorbs more juice and gets hydrated faster. Again, repeat the process a few times a day for best results.
When you apply rose petals soaked in milk onto your chapped lips, you not only moisturise them but also enhance their colour. Take10 to 12 rose petals, wash them and soak them in milk for a few hours. Take the petals out and mash them. Apply a thin layer of the paste onto your dry lips and leave it on for an hour. Wash it off with cold water. Repeat four to five times a day.
One of the simplest, yet effective ways of getting rid of chapped lips is the application of petroleum jelly. You can but it in any pharmacy. It’s usually sold in small, handy cases that you can always have on you. Apply a thin coat of petroleum jelly on your lips every hour. Remember to put a thicker layer before bedtime. Once your lips get back to their perfect condition, keep using the petroleum jelly a few times a day, especially before going out in winter or in windy weather. This way you will protect your lips from getting dry and cracked again.
Castor oil is also a popular and effective remedy for dry and chapped lips. You can buy a small bottle of castor oil and apply it on your dry lips several times a day to bring them back to a good condition. If you want, you can mix castor oil with other nourishing oils, like olive oil or jojoba oil.
Dehydration is one of the most common causes of dry lips, so boost the hydration level in the whole body by drinking two litres of water every day. Don’t wait until you actually feel thirsty. Instead, sip water in small amounts throughout the day. This way all the cells in your body, including the skin cells, will get the much-needed water and will regenerate faster, which means that your lips will become smooth again in no time.
If you decide to reach for an over-the-counter ointment or for a care lipstick, choose the product that is based on natural ingredients only. The ones you should be looking for are beeswax, jojoba oil, almond oil, olive oil and shea butter. If you can’t find any product, where one of these ingredients is the first on the list (which means it’s the one you’ll find the most of in the ointment or care lipstick), better reach for one of them in their pure form or make a mixture of shea butter and jojoba oil at home and apply it on your lips several times a day.
Remember that if your lips are dry due to cold weather, it’s important not to apply a care lipstick based on water when you go out. The water penetrates the thin skin and with very low temperatures, it can change its physical state and crack the skin from the inside.
If your lips are badly chapped, they cause a major pain. Some people can’t even eat or drink anything hot because it irritates the lips so much. You can relieve the discomfort fast by applying an ice pack. Take a few ice cubes and wrap them in a clean, soft cloth. Press the ice pack gently against the sore lips and hold it like this for a few minutes. Continue the treatment for 10 to 15 minutes and repeat it a few times a day if necessary.
Nourishing oils are a great way to get rid of dry, cracked lips fast. You can use olive oil or coconut oil from your kitchen or you can but jojoba oil or almond oil in a health food store or in a pharmacy. Apply the chosen oil (or a mix of them) on your dry skin four to five times a day. It’s a good idea to apply one of the oils on your lips before bedtime, regardless of the state of your lips. They protect the skin really well and they will lower the chance of you getting chapped lips again.
