Is your hair naturally curly or wavy? Do you use a flat iron to straighten your hair when you want to achieve a smooth, modern look for a special night out? Or maybe you straighten your hair on a daily basis? If a good hair day means straight hair day to you, we have some good news.
You don’t have to apply the damaging heat to your hair every single day. There are many home treatments that will help you get straight hair without the time-consuming everyday styling.
Even though waves may look beautiful, straight hair is simply easier to style. It also makes your facial features more pronounced. The point is that if your hair is straight, but doesn’t look healthy and shiny, the look is not that impressive anymore.
That is why you should try to switch from a flat iron to some natural ways of straightening hair, which will not only help you style your hair the way you want but also give your hair the gloss you are craving for.
How To Get Straight Hair With Home Treatments
Coconut milk is a popular ingredient in many shampoos and conditioners for a good reason. It not only moisturizes and nourishes the hair but also has antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties, so it helps maintain the scalp in a good condition, too. Shampoos and conditioners contain only a small amount of coconut milk and to make the most of its benefits you should use the pure, organic version of this product.
Get a cup of coconut milk and pour it into a glass bowl or a jar. Squeeze the juice of one lemon and add it to the container. Put the mixture into the fridge for a few hours. When you take it out of the fridge after that time, you will see that on the top of the mix there is a creamy layer. This is the mask you will use on your hair to make it smooth, straight and shiny.
Wash your hair with a delicate shampoo and rinse it well. Dry your hair with a towel and apply the coconut milk hair mask on the moist hair, massaging it both into the scalp and the hair. Cover the hair with a shower cap and wrap a warm towel around it. You can either use a towel that you soak in hot water and wring it or you can put a moist towel in the microwave for one minute.
The slightly higher temperature will make the nutrients from the coconut milk mask be absorbed faster. Leave the mask on for 20-30 minutes and rinse it off with warm water. Comb your hair and leave it to dry. It’s best to do it in the evening, rather than before going out so that you don’t have to apply heat on the freshly nourished hair.
This treatment gives visible effects after just one use, but to get really good results you should do it twice a week.
Regular milk is also known to be used in many hair-straightening and moisturizing products. Thanks to the high level of proteins contained it makes the hair stronger and smoother. There are many ways of applying milk onto the hair and probably the handiest one is with a spray bottle.
Mix half a cup of milk with half a cup of water and apply the combination onto your hair, strand by strand, then comb your hair and leave the milk on for 30 minutes. After that time rinse your hair with warm water and shampoo it as usual.
Alternatively, you can mix a tablespoon of honey and three crushed strawberries in a cup of milk. Wash your hair to cleanse it of any chemical products, dry it with a towel and apply the mixture on the moist hair. Leave it on for 30 minutes. You can cover your hair with a shower cap. Rinse the mixture off with warm water and shampoo it again.
Milk also does wonders when combined with eggs. It provides a protein boost to your hair and straightens the protein bonds in the hair. The treatment has been reported to give relatively long-lasting effects. Stir 2 eggs into 2 cups of organic milk and pour it over your hair or dip your hair in the mixture.
Once all the hair is soaked with the solution, leave it on for 30 minutes and rinse it off with warm water, then shampoo. You can repeat this treatment 2-3 times a week.
Hot Oil Treatment
Various oils can be used for home treatments aimed at straightening the hair. The most popular ones are coconut, olive, almond and sesame oils. Obviously, just like in the case of any other home treatment that involves the products you can find in the kitchen, it’s best if you go for the organic products. You can use only one type of oil or mix them in equal amounts to achieve a stronger nourishing effect.
Pour the oil into a small bowl and heat it in the microwave for up to half a minute. The oil cannot be too hot because it can damage your hair and burn your scalp when it comes in contact with the delicate skin on your head. Also, when you bring the oil to a very high temperature, it loses some of its properties. Dip your fingers in the warm oil and massage it into your scalp with gentle, circular movements.
Once your scalp absorbs enough oil, apply a small amount of it to the endings. Then comb your hair to distribute the oil its whole length. Wet a towel in hot water, wring it and wrap around your hair. Leave it on for 30 minutes, then shampoo your hair as usual. Finish the treatment off by combing the hair with a wide-toothed comb. Avoid using a brush during this type of treatments.
Regular hot oil treatment will make your hair stronger, softer, shinier and – most importantly – straight. Remember, however, that it might not be suitable for very thin hair as it adds a bit of weight and could make your hair lose volume.
